Don't Fall for These Mother's Day Coupon Scams

Don't Fall for These Mother's Day Coupon Scams
May 9, 2017

Watch out for Mother’s Day coupon scams online.

Coupons for $50 off at Lowe’s or Bed, Bath and Beyond are making the rounds on social media—and, unfortunately, they really are too good to be true. They’re fake. They'll take you to a page featuring the retailer logo, ask you to fill out a survey to receive the deal, and then steal your personal information.

“Millions of people fall for scams like these,” said Adam Levin, chairman and founder of CyberScout, on “The Today Show” on Tuesday. “Phishing has become incredibly prevalent. Credit card takeover is really the largest category of identity theft.”

Follow Levin’s tips to protect yourself:

  • Verify. Visit the retailer website or store to confirm the coupon before use.
  • Use caution. Think twice before clicking on links that may be infected with malware designed to steal your personal information.
  • Avoid oversharing on social media. Never authenticate yourself online if you didn’t initiate contact.

Consumers should check with their providers. They already may be covered for identity defense services from CyberScout through their insurer, financial institution and employer.
